The 2016 Yamaha YZF-R1 60th Anniversary edition was a special model released to celebrate 60 years of Yamaha Motor Company. It paid tribute to Yamaha's rich racing heritage by featuring the iconic retro yellow and black "speed block" livery, famously associated with racing legends like Kenny Roberts.
Beyond its striking aesthetics, the 60th Anniversary R1 embodied the cutting-edge technology of the eighth-generation R1, which had undergone a radical redesign in 2015. Key features included:
MotoGP-Derived Crossplane Crankshaft Engine: A lightweight and compact 998cc inline-four engine with a crossplane crankshaft, delivering high horsepower and strong linear torque. This engine also featured titanium fracture-split connecting rods, a first for a production motorcycle.
Class-leading Electronics Package: The R1 boasted an advanced suite of MotoGP-inspired electronics, including the first six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) on a street-going motorcycle. This IMU measured pitch, roll, yaw, and acceleration, allowing for precise control of systems like banking-sensitive Traction Control, Slide Control, Wheel Lift Control, Quickshifter, Launch Control, ABS, and a Unified Braking System.
Deltabox® Frame: An advanced aluminum Deltabox® frame that utilized the engine as a stressed member, providing optimal rigidity balance.
Titanium Exhaust System: A lightweight Akrapovic titanium slip-on muffler and titanium headers, contributing to improved mass centralization and reinforcing its race-bred DNA.
MotoGP® Styling: The bike's styling was directly inspired by the YZR-M1 MotoGP machine, sculpted for maximum aerodynamic efficiency.
